He continued with the story
Of his latest business venture,
At times interspersed with phone calls
Or news of family and friends.

I wanted to mention the awe
Of first seeing the northern lights
And their frenzied undulations;
At times covering the night sky
With many wild, breathing colors;

Early August

The morning garden chatter spoke
Of the ripening chokecherries:
In a week the firm green berries
Have become a plump burgundy.

Soon after the fledglings have flown
The annual gathering begins
With errant flights of drunkenness;
Ending in somber discussions
Of migratory timeliness.

Fifty-seven winters
I have perched on this coast,
To watch the tide rise up
Only to fall again.
I gawk at you bipeds
Gawking at me in awe,
When my outstretched wings touch

Love that can only emanate

This love of things or position

To a dying humanity.

Are broadcast through the media

Leaving the glare of city lights,
We drove on dusty mountain roads
Into valleys, over passes,

      Warning of temptation’s vultures
      That pilot desire’s mortal hearse.
   In scripture Providence’s seed
Is sown to grow and show the way
   For man to quench his thirstful need
