Preface to First Edition

The poems included in this collection appear in previously published books. They were presented in an order approximating a calendar year for public readings. From those readings the idea of one day publishing them in a book entitled A Year in Hope began to germinate. . . Finally, here it is.

For more than three decades my wife, Karen, and I have been perched on this hillside overlooking Lake Pend d’Oreille. The following poems are an attempt to share a few of the many observations it has been our privilege to experience.
